The Tale of Genji, the world's oldest full-length novel, was written by Murasaki Shikibu. The novel has transcended the millennium and continues to be loved to this day, has often been used as a subject for paintings since ancient times. This exhibition introduces Japanese paintings depicting The Tale of Genji with commentary on each scene.
Saga Arashiyama is strongly linked to The Tale of Genji, one of the oldest novel written by woman in Japan.
In a house not far from this museum, the author tells us Hikaru Genji kept his concubine Lady Akashi and their daughter. Other magnificent shrines and temples within walking distance are also famous for their links to the story. For example, the villa of Minamoto no Tōru, the likely model for Genji, once stood at nearby Seiryō-ji, which still retains his gravestone; Nonomiya Shrine is mentioned as the place where Genji met Lady Rokujō in secret; and a little south of Daikakuji Temple, Genji is said to have built a temple hall.
This exhibition draws on these local connections and presents paintings based on The Tale of Genji. The novel has endured for centuries and visual works derived from it are still popular today. As well as viewing the works, while you are in Arashiyama, why not visit impressive sites and place yourself in the elegant world of the story?
