Sagano and Arashiyama have been cherished by aristocrats and cultural figures since ancient times. Our museum is dedicated to conveying the history and charm of the Hyakunin Isshu, which is said to have originated in this area, as well as the essence of Japanese painting.
As you ascend the stone steps and pass through the karamon gate, you enter a stone garden where you can enjoy the beauty of the four seasons: weeping cherry blossoms in spring, Satsuki azaleas in early summer, autumn leaves, and snow-covered scenery in winter. The view from the second floor, with Mount Ogura, associated with the Hyakunin Isshu, in the background and the scenic Arashiyama and Ōi River as borrowed scenery, resembles a world of Japanese paintings.
We offer enchanting special exhibitions each season so that everyone can feel and enjoy the beauty of Japan alongside the stunning natural surroundings.
