Takehisa Yumeji; All You Need to Know

2027年03月17日(水) - 2027年07月11日(日)

A celebrated artist, Takehisa Yumeji (1884–1934) was at the beating heart of Taishō Romanticism.

While you may not be familiar with Yumeji by name, you have probably come across Yumeji Design in commercial products adorned with camellia motifs or his many depictions of young girls in illustrated stories or ads. Even for people encountering this artist for the first time, starting with the basics, this exhibition will help to unravel Yumeji's enduring appeal.

Overview of the Exhibition

As well as being an entirely self-taught visual artist, active across a remarkably broad range of interests, Yumeji also demonstrated talent in literature and music: he was what we would today call a multi-disciplinary
creator. While he depicted ephemeral Yumeji-style beauties in nihonga paintings, he also bequeathed some rare oil paintings, of which only about 30 are currently known to exist: you can see six of them in this exhibition.

The public loved his book covers, colorful chiyogami paper, and his published sketches of everyday life. He also wrote lyrics and, naturally, designed sheet
music publications.

What is more, for the first time ever during a single show, we will display the two iconic watercolor series that Yumeji painted and gave to his close friend
Nagami Tokutarō (1890–1950), a wealthy Nagasaki magnate. You can see Twelve Views of Nagasaki in the first exhibition period, and Ten Themes of Woman in the second.

A vibrant and fantastical spirit animated the Taishō era (1912–1926), Yumeji's enchanted art expressed its essence.
