Overview of the Exhibition

The famous places, traditional events, and distinctive culture that attracted the artist's eye still fascinate both Japanese and overseas visitors. The show features Scenes in and Around Central Kyoto (first show period), Scenes Outside Central Kyoto (middle and late show period), and Hara Zaichū's (1750−1837) Aoi Matsuri Scroll (sections on display in each period).
You can both feast your eyes on depictions of iconic Kyoto geiko and maiko, and savor paintings of well-loved Kyoto vegetables.

In this city known for its long-established shops, packaging has long brought delight to urban culture. Japanese sweet shops even commissioned top artists to design wrapping. Here you can see examples created by Tomioka Tessai (1836−1924), Ikeda Yōson (1895−1988), and others.

Whether you are a first-time visitor or a resident, we hope the art in this exhibition helps you to discover things you didn’t know and to more deeply appreciate Kyoto city life and culture.
