Konoshima Ōkoku (1877–1938) was born in Sanjō Muromachi, Kyoto. When he was 16, he began studying under flower-and-bird painting specialist Imao Keinen. He honed his observation by sketching from life and his paintings soon attracted favorable attention. We held our last Ōkoku exhibition nearly four years ago in 2021. Responding to public interest we are now holding a long-awaited retrospective as a co-host exhibition with Fukuda Art Museum.
Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture will show works by Ōkoku along with those of Kikuchi Keigetsu, Dōmoto Inshō, Ono Chikkyoō and others who followed Ōkoku and settled in Kinugasa, north of Kyoto. This show is an opporutnity to see, in one place, the paintings of artists who worked at the asme time and chose to live near each other in suburban Kyoto.
Held jointly by close-neighbor museums, this large exhibition is a great chance to more fully experience the charm of Ōkoku.
