In this exhibition featuring works based on Hyakunin Isshu and The Tales of Ise, we hope you will enjoy becoming more familiar with Japanese classical literature.
The Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts & Culture will hold its annual exhibition on the Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of one hundred poems.
This year's exhibition will also focus on The Tale of Ise, which features Ariwara-no-Narihira , a famous poet from the Hyakunin Isshu anthology who is said to be a handsome noble man.
We hope that this exhibition will provide an opportunity for visitors to become more familiar with the Hyakunin Isshu and the Tales of Ise, two works of classical literature.
The Ogura Hyakunin Isshu, a collection of one hundred poems compiled by the poet Fujiwara-no-Teika (1162–1241), is still popular with many people today.
In the first section of this exhibition, visitors can see calligraphy and paintings related to the Hyakunin Isshu. The Ogura Shikishi, which is said to have been handwritten by Teika, is a valuable work that conveys the original form of the Hyakunin Isshu. Also on display are a number of Japanese paintings from the early modern period to the modern era depicting poets who appear in the Hyakunin Isshu, including the 'The Six Immortal Poets ' by Kikuchi Keigetsu. Please enjoy the exhibition while thinking back to ancient times.
The second chapter focuses on Ariwara-no-Narihiara, who composed No. 17 'Chihayafuru~' (Unimagined / even by mighty gods / Tatsuta streams / under crimson reaches / dappling the flow) from the Hyakunin Isshu poems. The Tales of Ise, which revolves around the waka poems of the hero Narihira, is read together with paintings that evoke scenes from the tale.
