Animals often appear in Japanese painting.
The theme that many painters have tackled since ancient times has been how to depict moving creatures by observing wild animals that live close at hand, such as deer and raccoon dogs, as well as domestic animals that have supported people's lives as livestock, such as cows and horses.
This exhibition introduces a variety of animal paintings, including the thoughts of painters who were fascinated by animals and the background to their work.

Starting with Maruyama Ōkyo's charming Puppies with Bamboo (the first term of the exhibition), the master tiger painter Ōhashi Suiseki's King of Beasts (all terms), the gentle-eyed deer in Konoshima Ōkoku's Lone Deer in Autumn (all terms), Takeuchi Seiho's Cattle in Pastureland (all terms) painted on full gold screens, and Hishida Shunsō's White Cat under a Plum Tree (all terms), the exhibition will showcase outstanding animal paintings by the masters. We hope that visitors will be able to appreciate the painters' fascination with animals through these animal paintings.
