Kyoto's art scene in the 18th century produced many prominent artists such as Ito Jakuchu and Maruyama Okyo, and Nagasawa Rosetsu. The exhibition offers you the opportunity to appreciate their works while discovering the similarities and differences of the unique artists of the Edo period.
In the 18th century, many painters from the merchant and farmer class such as Ito Jakuchu (1716-1800) and Maruyama Okyo (1733-1795) were making successful careers in Kyoto.
Many of them established the unique style of painting after they learned the basics of art at Kano School, which had been the established art school since the Muromachi Period. What was the utmost state of the painting that each painter had attained by themselves?
In this exhibition, the works of various artists of Jakuchu's age are displayed side-by-side. The featured artists are Maruyama Okyo depicting peacocks and his son Ozui (1766-1829),
Goshun (1752-1811), who was influenced by Okyo, Jakuchu, his younger brother Hakusai, and other painters who admired and followed Jakuchu. By comparing the works of the same subject or the works of the masters and their students, you can approach the charm of each painter.
