Overview of the Exhibition

Nowadays Arashiyama, home of the Saga Arashiyama Museum of Arts and Culture, welcomes large numbers of visitors every year; it was during the Edo period (1600-1868) that ordinary Japanese people first had the opportunity to travel for leisure. Beautiful locations in each region became famous as 'scenic spots' that everyone wanted to visit.
It was in this era that Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) produced his 'Fifty-three Stations on the Tōkaidō', a series of innovative views of beautiful locations along the famous Edo to Kyoto route, to great popular acclaim. The current show presents the entire 'Fifty-three Stations' in two sections and alongside these, other works depicting popular beauty spots such as 'Three Beautiful Women on the banks of the Sumida River' by Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849), and screens showing 'Scenes in and around Kyoto' illustrating Kyoto life during the Edo period.

Let’s stop the clock for a while and visit some of these famous scenic spots.
