海峡を隔てて日中は見えるあの淡路島から渡ってくる千鳥の鳴く悲しい声に、この須磨の関所の番人は幾夜目を覚まして物思いにふけったことだろうか。
The sad cries of the plover can be heard as they make their way over the straits from Awaji Island, which can be seen during the day, yet is shrouded in darkness at night. I wonder how many times the night watchman at Suma has been awakened and tantalized by those cries.
