Though a number of oral traditions related to him exist in many different areas, the background to these is shrouded in mystery. He was one of the Thirty-Six Immortal Poets.

遠く人里離れた奥山で、一面散り積もった紅葉の枯れ葉を踏み分けながら、恋の相手を求めて鳴く雄鹿の声を聞くときこそ、秋の悲しさはひとしお身にしみて感じられるものだ。
In the depths of the faraway mountains, I step on beds of fallen leaves. I hear a deer calling for his mate, and a feeling of sadness pierces my heart.
